Yesterday I shared my One Little Word for 2017: Secure. It’s not a particularly sexy word. It’s not even pretty, really. But it is necessary. And I’m grateful to be here and I’m grateful to get started.
If there is one thing that you can take away from each and every yoga class that I teach, it’s that each pose – no matter how flexible, incredible, powerful, or beautiful – always begins with a solid, stable foundation.
That’s what this year is all about: the foundation.
Each month this year I’ll be working through my own personal projects around SECURE. In the end, I’m hoping to feel more secure in my body, my relationships, in my home, my career, more financially secure, etc..
Those are the building blocks to grow, expand, shake, ignite.
Those are the building blocks of the life I imagine for us.
But it all starts with a foundation. And here we are. And here I am.
My Plan for OLW in 2017
Listen, this year is really important to me. This project, while fun and – at times – very necessary in the past, is somewhat critical this year. Or at least right now.
I am in need of this word. Of this work. Of this time.
I do my best work when I approach a project with a plan. A plan with goals and objectives that are clear, measurable, and attainable. A plan with grand hopes and practical applications. A plan with tools and resources that support a positive outcome.
I need a plan with structure that allows me to dive into it when inspiration happens. A plan that helps me to succeed in this project, in this year, more than ever before. A plan that has the flexibility to be accessible, even when life with two littles demands otherwise.
So my plan this year it to create a foundation of support tools that allow me to progress on this project no matter where I am or what I’m doing.
How I’m Going to Succeed In This Project This Year
This is in the beginning stages, but already I have a handful of support tools that are coming together. Those tools include:
- a bullet journal
- a OLW 6×8 Album
- a small, blank notebook to write in
- inspirational quotes that keep me going
This year I bought Ali Edwards’ One Little Word physical kit and a few small notebooks that I can carry with me. I have tools and supplies that I’m excited to use. And I placed all of them in a part of the house that I can sneak away to when everyone else is occupied.
I also set up a Google Drive folder for journal entries that I can add to with my phone. Because it has speech recognition, I can truly add messages, thoughts, and build on ideas no matter where I am or what I’m doing. Which is good, because memory keeping, writing, and investing time in myself has become hard these days.
How it Starts
I’m already almost a week into my January initiative, working to give myself more security in my body by addressing diet + exercise in a way that gives me confidence, not in what it looks like, but in how it feels.
So there it is. It’s a plan. A start. A beginning. And I’m looking forward to see how it all comes together.
For several years Ali Edwards has started her year with a word. No resolutions or promises to break, just one little word® to check back on for guidance or reflection. As she describes it, “You live with it. You invite it into your life. You let it speak to you. Follow where it leads. There are so many possibilities.” After a challenging 2016, my choice for 2017 is to become SECURE. Each month, I’m focused on a different aspect of securing who I am, where I am, and what we’re doing. I hope you’ll join me on this journey.
